Sample of SAQs

Here are several examples of the good and bad SAQs.

A Bad SAQ:  
  • ambiguous instructions 
  • candidates have no idea what they are supposed to write

Example of bad SAQ:
Example 1 
Instruction: Rewrite the following sentence, starting with the words provided. The new sentence must be as close as possible to the original.  
It was Vince who saved the dog.
If it __________________________.
Rationale:
1. There are too many possible answers. 
2. It tests candidates' creativity in writing only. 
3. It is not at all clear what is wanted.   

Example 2 
Instruction: Write short answer for the following question.   
Break down the acronym EPIC.
Answer: Experiential, Participatory, Image-driven, Connectedness 
Rationale:
1. The understanding of the term is more important than the exact words.  
2. The expected response of the question is when 'Participatory' is remembered as 'Participation' or 'Connectedness' is remembered as 'Connection'


A Good SAQ:
  • have clear instructions 
  • straightforward item
  • candidates know the expected answers
  • does not measure interpretation 
  • requires specific, definite, exact information


Example of good SAQ:

Example 1 
Instruction: Complete the following sentence, starting with the words provided. The new sentence must be as close as possible to the original.  
It was Vince who saved the dog.
If it ____________________, the dog would have died.  
Example 2 
Instruction: Answer the following question.  Your answer must not be more than 3 words. 
When is Malaysia Day?
__________________________
